Investigating Shadows

Today, we have been investigating how the length of a shadow changes as the light moves closer to an object.  We used the following equipment: a little card figure, a torch, a background and some rulers.  We positioned the torch 30 cm away from the figure and measured the height of the shadow.  We then moved the torch nearer to the figure by 5 cm and measured the height again.  We repeated the process every 5 cm and recorded our results.

We found that our predictions were correct.

The shorter the distance between the torch and the figure, the larger the shadow.

The greater the distance between the torch and the figure, the smaller the shadow.
